First, visit the “issue” page on each website.
On scrap paper, list all the “issues” included by each candidate (you might find a T chart helpful here).
Jot down how the issues are organized.
Now, choose two issues that both candidates address. Carefully read the candidates’ positions. Compare and contrast them on your scrap paper.
In your blog entry, write a coherent paragraph on each issue, comparing and contrasting the positions. Tell us the basic issue, where the candidates seem to agree and disagree, and who you agree (more) with and why. You should have at least one paragraph for each issue (2 paragraphs total), but you may have more if necessary.

Obama and McCain have very different ideas about Iraq. Obama says that we are only making things worse. He says that things could be much better if we came out of Iraq and tried something with more of a strategy. McCain disagrees. He says that we can’t lose this war. He want the American solders to stay in Iraq and keep fighting. I agree with Obama. We need to have some strategy if we are ever going to get anything done. In Iraq we have nothing. We can win in a more peaceful way!

Sarah, you’re on the right track, but have not quite followed the directions. Look them over again. What have you not done?

The war in Iraq has been a very big problem these past year and has cost billions of dollars, and thousands of lives of Americans. Obama and McCain have very different opinions on how to handle the war in Iraq, although they do have some similarities. Obama will have a very slow removal of troops in Iraq, while McCain wants to leave troops in Iraq for now. Obama will apply pressure to the Iraqi government to work toward a stronger government. McCain says you have to get jobs to have a strong government, and he will give money to Iraq to help boost the government. I agree with Obama more on this issue, because I think it is important to take out troops in Iraq, but not too fast, because that will only bring chaos again. Although Obama and McCain have different perspectives on how to do it, both want to stop the war in Iraq, and both want to encourage a stronger government in Iraq.
The economic crisis is a very big issue in America right now. Many people are becoming very scared about the result the failing economy could have on America. Obama and McCain also have different opinions on how to handle the economic crisis America is going through right now. Obama will give $1000 emergency energy rebate to weak families. He will also provide $50 billion to jumpstart the economy. He will also eliminate income taxes to seniors making less than $50,000 a year. McCain will increase the value of the dollar to reduce oil prices. He says no taxpayer should bail out real estate speculators. I also agree with Obama here, because I think the economy needs more than a big jumpstart right now, because of the crisis, and I think it’s a great idea to give money to families in need for energy money. While the have different opinions on how to do it, both want to help the economy, and want to help people from losing their jobs.

Education is important to all the countries in the world. Barack Obama and John McCain have different thoughts about education but there are also some similarities between them. Base on their opinions, Obama like to increase the quality of school and McCain thinks that school should compete to each other and if the school can’t change that students should be able to change school and they both mention the No Child Left Behind. They both agree about choose the good teachers and reward them. I agree more with Obama because what I think is that increase the quality of school is important than let school compete because first the president should make sure that all the school has high quality.
In the Iraq war, thousands of Americans died and billions of dollars are gone but it is still a problem. Obama and McCain also have different suggestions. Obama wants the troops in Iraq come back to America as soon as possible and McCain wants the troops to stay there as long as the government can’t handle the safety. However, they both agree that to get the economy of Iraq back. I agree more with Obama. To let the army stay there is a waste of time and money and we have to think a strategy or we can’t do anything. The best way is to end the war.

A big issue in America is the Iraq war. Obama wants to withdraw all the troops in 16 months. McCain, on the other hand, wants to leave troops in Iraq until it is stable. Obama would put Iraqis in charge of rebuilding and stabilizing their country using Iraq oil money, while McCain would use US troops and money for that. Obama would rely on diplomacy to stabilize Iraq, including talking to Iran, Syria, and other neighbors of Iraq. McCain would rely on the Iraqi government and political process to stabilize Iraq, and ask other countries to pressure Iran and Syria to change their behavior. I have to agree with Obama on this one, because thousands of people have died in this war which has lasted 5 years, longer than World War I, World War II, or the Civil War. I think the war should end as soon as it can.
Technology is another issue that both candidates discuss on their websites. McCain wants to keep taxes low to encourage innovation, give money and computers to community colleges, let more skilled workers into the US from other countries, promote free and fair trade around the world, and provide high-speed Internet access to all Americans. Obama wants to use technology to fight global warming by promoting renewal energy, give money to community colleges and people who lost their jobs because of unfair trade, ask for fair trade in other countries, and preserve open competition on the Internet. Obama would encourage more math and science graduates to become teachers and increase the math and science for kids in grades K-12. All these ideas sound good to me and I’m not sure which candidate I prefer on this issue.

John McCain and Barack Obama’s ideas differ on the issue of the war an Iraq. Barack Obama says that he will get all of the troops out save lives and money, so that it can be spent on more important things. John McCain believes it is essential for the United States to win the war in Iraq so that Iraq is capable of governing itself and protecting its people. I think that Barack Obama’s Idea is more important to America.
Barack Obama and John McCain have different and similar ideas on energy. John McCain thinks that we should expand America’s sources of natural gas exploration and production and break dependency on foreign gas, and he will invest 2 billion annually on alternative energy sources. Barack Obama says he will also stop imports from foreign gas coming to America and says he will make millions of new, “green” job opportunities. He explained he will be willing to spend 150 billion dollars on alternative energy sources and therefore reduce the greenhouse gasses by 80 percent by 2050.

One of the two issues that i focused on during this was Environmental/ Global Warming. The candidates both talked about their role in the global warming acts. On Obama’s website, i found that he is trying to reverse the effects of global warming by putting more hybrids and electric cars or cars with high MPGs on the road by 2015. McCain’s role in this was that he planned to get more people interested in exercise instead of cars, so that the green house gas emissions will decrease.
10 KD (KD stands for kendra) // Oct 14, 2008 at 10:22 am
a second issue that i focused on was women. Obama’s website did include the role of women in america, but McCain’s did not. For Obama, he said that he will try as best he can to lower the percentage of women being attacked in america on women. He also plans to ensure that women are not discriminated against in any way. He wants to ensure women their safety and to me that is very important, because i am a woman, or will be. And i do not want anything to happen to me like that.

When it comes to illegal immigration, Obama and McCain are mostly on the same page, but not quite. They both agree that it is a part of the economy and that it can’t be stopped all at once. They both know that it is putting Americans out of work and giving cheep labor. They agree that the best way to solve this problem is to stop people from hiring them and to give them citizenship. Then they will stop working for so little and ruining the economy. Obama and McCain plan to do this a bit differently. Obama thinks that since they are already here they should be offered citizen ship. McCain thinks that they should be sent back to Mexico to wait in line like the other immigrants. I agree with Obama. If people already have lifes here we shouldn’t ruin them, we should help them. McCains plan would ruin them and they might not have lives anywhere else.

Both John McCain, and Barrack Obama have similarities in their plans for the economy. Both candidates want to lower restrictions on foreign trade. Additionally, They both want fairer simpler taxes and to provide tax relief for the middle class. Also both of them support small businesses and simpler healthcare. The two of them do have some differences in their plans though. One of these differences is that Obama wants to crack down on home loan fraud. While John McCain wants to reform the governments economic sectors. Those are some of the similarities and differences between John McCain and Barrack Obama’s economic plans.

Barack Obama and John McCain have very different opinions on what the United States must do in Iraq. John McCain believes that the War in Iraq has been successful. He says it would be a big mistake to withdraw troops from Iraq before the Al Qaeda forces that are in Iraq have been defeated. Barack Obama has opposed the war since 2002 when he spoke out against it. Barack Obama says if he is elected president he will end the war in Iraq by withdrawing United States soldiers. He has a 16 month withdrawal plan that will bring home US troops. I agree with Barack Obama that we shouldn’t have ever went into Iraq and now we should take troops out. Iraq was more stable under Sadam Hussien’s rule then it is now.

Mccain and Obama have very different views on most of the issues. I looked at the Energy and Enviroment one though, and they seemed to both have some similar views. One was that they both want to have a smaller dependency on foreign oil. Mccain wants to go offshore though, while Obama doesn’t. They both, also want to lower the price of oil. This is becoming difficult for many people who own cars and both campaigns will try to fix it. They also both want to create green jobs, although it is a bigger deal for Obama. I agree with Obama on this issue for many reasons. One is that offshore drilling, doesn’t seem like a good idea in my mind. We are already dealing with trash in our oceans, if there is an oil spill on an offshore plant, many animals will die. I think that Obama seems to have his issue more thought through, and I agree with him here.
15 emma // Oct 16, 2008 at 3:37 pm
Barack Obama and John Mccain also have very different ideas about the immigration issue. Mccain says we have to ” fix our broken borders” and ” recognize the important economic contribution of immigrant laborers,” I think that this is a little stereotypical. The idea of immigration labor being the only benefit of immigration is probably untrue. It may benefit the people they are working for, but that still is unfair to the people who come in search of a better life, or for other various reasons. When we go to other countries, we are not only considered for our labor. On the other hand, Barack Obama has very different ideas. Barack Obama says on the site “for reform to work, we also must respond to what pulls people to America” and “Obama and Biden will remove incentives to enter the country illegally by cracking down on employers who hire undocumented immigrants.” I think that Barack Obama and Biden are looking at how to stop what is causing the problem more than John Mccain and Sarah Palin are. They are looking more at just how to stop it. I think that cutting the problem off at the roots (like taking out weeds, with the roots) is much more effective than trying to stop things in the front (just cutting off a weeds resources.) I think that Barack Obama’s plan may have issues, and will take longer, but when it does work it will be more effective than Mccains.

When it comes to the situation in Iraq, McCain and Obama have some very different ideas of what we need to do, while at the same time their ideas have one or two similarities.
John McCain believes that American troops need to stay in Iraq until we believe that their government can “safegaurd its own people”. He wants to give money to Iraq that way they can create more jobs and hopeffully jump start the economy. If he becomes president, he also says that they will send MORE troops to the middle east, this time focusing on Iran and Syria.
Barack Obama on the other hand, believs that we “should be as careful getting out, as we were careless getting in”. By 2010 the troops should be out. He will leave some troops there, but they will not build permanant bases. They will stay there to gaurd American diplomatic and civilian personel, help stop al Qaeda attacks, and train some of the Iraqi forces there.
They both want to end the war, they just have some different strategies, and i agree with Obama’s.
It’s terrible to think of all of those American people going out there every day and risking their lives, and the fact that some don’t go home.
17 Jessica J. // Oct 19, 2008 at 10:24 am
When it comes to the environment, McCain and Obama’s policies are much the same. They both propose a cap-and-trade policy for companies that put a lot of polution into the air. The “cap” part of the plan, means that compainies that emit pollution into the air can now only emit a certain amount, and they have to pay in order to be able to put out out pollution. As opposed to what’s happening now, where they can put out as much as they want for free. They also want to reduce our dependancy on foreign oil. I agree with Obama on the issue of offshore drilling though, McCain’s policy says that they will search for oil in our oceans, but Obama opposes that, it would be terrible for the environment if that happened, millions of sea creatures and birds would loose their lives. It’s not exactly something that would help us stop global warming.

John McCain’s view on climate change is he just wants to improve it a lot. He wants to install green house gasses. He also wants to do the cap and trade system which is to trade bad fuels and replace them with carbon based fuels. Barack Obama’s has a different view on climate change. He wants to lower the price of gas for people. He also wants to make sure 10% of our electricity comes from renewable resources.

John McCain’s view on health care is he wants to lower the price of health care. He wants to make sure he knows exactly what he’s taking money from to lower the price. Barack Obama wants to lower the price and he wants to require that every child in America has it he also wants to lower the prices

Obama and McCain have similar and different opinions on the war in Iraq. Firstly, they both agree, as do many Americans, that Bush has failed, and I agree that Bush has done a miserable job. Second of all, they actually both agree that the American troops should eventually be withdrawn, but they don’t agree about in what way, how long it will take, and what should happen before the troops are withdrawn. McCain thinks that, the the troops should be withdrawn, but only after Iraq is stable, terrorist free, trained for defense, and back on its feet completely. Obama, on the other hand, wants to start with drawing troops immediatly if/when he becomes president, but in an efficiant, responsible, phased way, taking 1 or 2 brigades out a month. This will only happen, of course, after consultaion with the Iraqi government. They will apply pressure on the government and support it, so that it will have to regain control of itself, and there will be no permanent bases. And this whole process will end in about 16 months. i, personally agree with Obama. You may ask, “but what about the girls being raped there, the people being killed, the crimes and horrible things, all of that? If we leave, they will be devistated.” Well we’ve stayed there for quite slong time, and it hasn’t made the situation any better, and innocent people are still being hurt: the Iraqis want us out because we are only making it worse. Will it help us to stay there 5 more years? !10 more years? 15? 20? What good will it do? It will only waste another few trillion dollars! No big deal! Obama is correct on this issue in my opinion.
21 Lilly // Oct 22, 2008 at 3:01 pm
In the case of energy, enviroment and climate change, Obama and McCain have similar and different opinions. McCain believes that we should curb and set limits on greenhouse gas (GHG) emitions, as does Obama. They both believe in a trade-and-cap sytem, where you set limits onj GHG emissions and encourage enviroment friendly technology. But they have different ways and speeds in which to do this, and I agree with Obama more. First of all, on his website, it said,
“2012: Return Emissions To 2005 Levels (18 Percent Above 1990 Levels)
2020: Return Emissions To 1990 Levels (15 Percent Below 2005 Levels).”
You may have noticed that there is a mathmatical mistake here. Who wants a president that can’t do his math correctly? And even though, personally, either plan is not fast or efficiant enough, I think that Obama’s plan is better, because he never made the point of making a gradual reduction in GHG emissions as McCain did, and Obama’s plan includes putting 1,000,000 hybrid cars to the road by 2025, getting rid of foreign oil imports, and offering 5,000,000 green jobs – which McCain isn’t. McCain on the other hand, wants to by and sell rights for GHG emissions, encouraging the stive to gain the right to emit GHG’s, and to provide a climate change adaption plan, which I took to mean, “Get used to it, our world is getting warmer. The climat is going wacko, but you just have to live with it, nad get used to it.” What a good message this sends to Americans, and what a good cause that is. It tells you to vote for Obama, our bright future.

Barack Obama and John McCain each have a tax plan. Obama has plan where he will lower the taxes of families making less than 200,000 thousand dollars per year. He will make sure the taxes of families making less the 250,000 dollars per year are not increased. He will also provide tax cuts for families preparing to send a child to college and to low/middle income seniors. He will cut taxes for most small buisnesses. The richest 2% of families in America will have to give back some of the money they recieved under George W. Bush’s tax cuts. John McCain plans to bain internet taxes. He also wants to ban cell phone taxes that come from texting. He also plans to cut the corporate tax rate. I agree with Obama’s plan because many families who need tax breaks will get them. Also, it is important for small buisnesses to get tax breaks because they will help the economy grow and they will be able to provide health care for employees.

Barack Obama and John McCain have a lot of similar opinions in education. They both think that there should be no children left behind. Barack Obama thinks that we should equip poor. In some opinions, Barack Obama and John McCain don’t have exactly the same. John McCain thinks that teachers shouldn’t give low standards for some students and high standards for others, but Barack Obama thinks that students should all be in high-qualities group and he will close the low-performing schools.
25 Joanne // Oct 22, 2008 at 4:35 pm
Barack Obama and John McCain have really different opinion in health care. Barack Obama says that American people should come to the hospital anytime when they need help, and don’t just stay home because of the taxes and expensive insurance. He says that he will give better insurance to employers. John McCain doesn’t agree Obama’s opinion. He thinks that we should take more care on families.

Barack Obama and John McCain have both similarities and differences. Some of their similarities are that they both want American families to have good healthcare although the candidates disagree on how to do this. Obama and McCain also believe that better child education and lower college costs are a vital part of America’s future. I mostly agree with Obama’s plan because of the reason it seems very realistic and possible compared to on the McCain website no real plan was said. The presidential candidates are very worried about the economy; both of them hope to increase personal savings rates which are at their lowest point since the great depression.
Barack Obama and John McCain have very different policies. John McCain’s plan says that he thinks the U.S should continue in Iraq until Al Qaeda is defeated. I agree more with Barack Obama’s plan which is to pull troops out of Iraq as soon as possible. The war in Iraq has caused many American deaths and casualties. Barack Obama also believes in a lowering taxes and healthcare by a big amount. He would give a great amount of tax cuts to middle class families on which the highest taxes in proportion are based on. McCain believes that giving a refundable tax refund to families as well as individuals. This money can be used to pay for good healthcare which both candidates believe in. Both candidates support that America stop using so much oil from foreign countries and they also both want to have a greener environment. Obama wants to cut gas prices and invest in electric cars and hybrids. McCain wants to invest in alternative energies and gases. The two candidates both have similarities and differences.

John McCain and Barack Obama have different views on healthcare. They both want cheaper and more affordable healthcare. But Obama’s plan is more normal. McCain wants to give everyone $5000 but healthcare for the average american family costs $12,000 a year. So McCain’s plan wouldn’t even pay for half of your healthcare for just one year. Obama would provide everyone with healthcare. If you don’t have healthcare you can buy it or if you don’t like your healthcare you can buy a different kind. And if you like your healthcare you can keep it but your yearly costs for health care will go down $2,500.
OBAMA FOR PRESIDENT!

John McCain proposes that to reduce our dependency on foreign oil, we must use more of our own. The problem with this is that we are in possesion of only 4% of the world’s oil, while we consume 25%. This will not work. Barack Obama on the other hand plans to reduce oil dependency all together as well as introducing a use the land or lose the land policy on existing American oil companies. This will work.
John McCain continues to drone on and on about earmarks. The fact is that earmarks account for about 3% of the spending. Obama on the other hand bases his plan on helping middle class families.

Barack Obama and John Mccain share many similar and also different opinions on the issues. One issue that they both seem to agree on is improving schools, and they follow the no child left behind policy.John Mccain believes that children should be competitive and they should be rewarded when they do something right. another issue they seem to both agree on is the economy. they both want to create more jobs that include being “green”. they also want to improve the acces to jobs. Obama wants to raise the minimum wage.

McCain doesn’t say so much about technology as I expect. His idea is to lower prices.
Obama talks more about technology, his idea is to make it better.

As in technology, McCain doesn’t talk about health care, he talks about lowering prices.
Obama’s idea is to give everyone the right to get health care.

This will help greatly to reduce the recession that the U.S. is in.

I agree Obama is right on education issue. Education is first.
We should give children the best education we can offer. according to McCain, the funding for school will be cut. So school will suffer.
I agree with Obama on health care. In America, some people can’t offer to buy health is insurance. if we go with McCain, we will spend more on health insurance.
